Build a List and Add Columns
This article and the accompanying video discuss building a list and adding columns to lists in SharePoint Oregon.gov sites.
Important Notes
Building a list will not necessarily affect site structure or navigation. Be sure to UNCHECK the option to include the list in the 'quick nav'. This will keep it and another item, 'Lists' from showing up on the website left navigation.
There are no workflows or approvals required for lists by default. Anything changed in a list will go 'live' moments after the change is made.

Using a List to Populate a Web Part
Sometimes it can be helpful to place the web part on a page first, before building the list that will populate it. By opening the web part for editing, an author can see exactly what the web part requires at a minimum, and what the possibilities and options are. In this way, the author is confident that the list is being built with columns and views sufficient to populate the chosen web part.
List Types
There are two commonly used list types in Oregon.gov websites.
- Custom Lists - this is a basic list that contains a single column, 'Title' when it is created. Columns are added appropriate to the purpose of the list and how the list will be displayed. Custom lists are the basis for populating most web parts on Oregon.gov.
- Calendar Lists - This list is specific to populating the Calendar web part. Columns may be added if desired, but not taken away. Removing columns may diminish the performance of the Calendar list/web part combination.
Column Types
There are many SharePoint column types available on Oregon.gov. For information on each type and the options associated with them, please see this Microsoft article: List and library column types and options
